The road to meditation part 3
So you have been noticing your patterns and are starting to be aware of what you’re doing. Great.
You have also started to focus and again be aware of your breathing.
Read part 1 and 2 of this blog HERE.
But we haven’t reached being able to meditate…just yet. But, if you do feel you can manage 2 mins a day – go for it.
The last thing I want to cover is gratitude. I know, right? Emma, you talk about it ATF (all the f time), and there’s good reason for me talking about it. BECAUSE IT WORKS!
You cannot feel stress at precisely the same time as thankfulness. Your brain physiologically cannot process them at the same time. Yes, you may flip between both emotions – but you can’t do both.
So, bring yourself to gratitude.
I get it. This may not seem as easy as it sounds.
You’re stressed out of your mind, and I am asking you to be thankful? I know, I know.
But you can do it. How do I know? Because I did it, and I genuinely believe that this changed my life. #honestly
On the days I felt like the world was closing in on me, gratitude gave me a chink of light. And at first, that chink was teenie-tiny.
The point of all of this is to reduce your fight/flight symptoms. So you can close your eyes and meditate daily for a few mins. By reducing this, the instinct to keep them open will alleviate.
So to summarise so far – notice your patterns, gain awareness, get focused and breathe. Add a sprinkle of gratitude, and maybe then you can meditate for a while.
It’s kind of a formula, hey? And guess what? Sometimes this will work, and sometimes not. The thing to consider is that if you try to meditate and you can’t, check-in if you have done these things…especially the breathing and gratitude.
Getting into meditation is not about the actual few minutes you are doing it – it’s about what flows from that for the rest of the day. You will find that you can manage your day better, situations will get easier, and you can gain perspective. You’ll be a better communicator and not realise the benefits until you forget to meditate. And you will forget. That’s just the thing. You’ll forget, then remember and then beat yourself up for this – so just get back on that metaphorical horse.
Over the coming weeks/months, I will share more about meditation, and you’ll even have the chance to have a session with me (online). But more on that later.
For now, give the formula a go.
