Your life compass

In which direction are you heading?

Do you even know?

Swimming around in indecision is exhausting and let’s be honest, you can just find yourself swimming in circles.

But, I am so unsure about where I’m going, Emma!

Ok, ok, I get it.

So how do you eat an elephant?

Yep, weirdo question alert.

You start with its toenails. #ewww

But really, that is what you need to start with. Sometimes we look at the big picture, ideas, and goals and get overwhelmed with the steps to get there. So don’t…for now. Just start with the first step, then the next one. Then the one after – all the while working on yourself.

What does that mean? Working on yourself?

Quite honestly, it’s going within and changing the bits that you don’t like or need to change to move forward.

Again, what does that look like?

Well, it can be done in a few ways. BTW this list isn’t exhaustive or in any order:

  • Get help and support

There is a plethora of help out there – me included! Reach out and ask for help dealing with any issues that you think you need to clear. You’d be surprised how fast you can move through this with the proper support. Personally, I see so many people with issues stemming 20+ years…all sorted in a session or two. Crazy but true.

  • Read/watch/listen to books/videos/podcasts on self-development

The amount of free resources out there is immense. You can practically get anything for free or cheap. We have mini-computers in our pockets, for goodness sake! You can literally Google your issue and go from there. Too lazy to read? Listen then! Whilst you’re driving to work or taking a walk – you can listen on the move and work out what’s going on.

  • Implement your learnings

It’s great to ‘learn’ all the things and read all the books – but there is something that many people don’t do. They don’t take action on the stuff they have learned. It’s a bit like daydreaming about the lottery and not purchasing a ticket. You have to take the action #getshitdone

Again, personally…this has been the most successful strategy I have used to date. Learn, implement and then teach someone what you have learnt. DO NOT MISS A STEP. Implement this. Embed it. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Then teach it if you like.

  • Hang out with like-minded individuals

Think about it. You are the average of the five people you hang out with. You are the average age, income, number of kids and weight (probably more), but who you hang out with influences you daily.

Unhappy about the people surrounding you? Change it. Ok, they could be your family, so find people who will keep you accountable, support/love you, and push you to be a better version of yourself now.

Can’t find anyone? Start online. You can find like-minded people in groups online across the world. Don’t be shy – they were like you once. And guess what? You will find that people who are working on themselves will always welcome you. They remember…

  • Catch yourself

Tune into your habits and behaviours. What are you telling yourself daily? What actions are you taking that are holding you back from change? Listen to your language. Can you change your words?

I know this isn’t a fast process, but it is doable – and once you start, you can’t stop. You can’t ‘un-know’ this.

Gosh, I could go on – but I think I will stop for now…

To summarise, start with one step and work on yourself. Trust that the rest will follow.
