Just ask.
You don’t get if you don’t ask.
What a simple statement. So true though yes?
So what is it about NOT asking? Why do we not ask for help? Ask for things? Ask for the solution? Ask for the sale?
This thought has been floating in my head for a few weeks – and yes you probably shouldn’t guess whats floating around in my head these days… dangerous territory!
There could be a few things here.
Fear of failure, fear for rejection. Or just plain FEAR.
That we will be ignored…refused…rejected. Could there be anything worse?
Actually I know that listening to Kanye West talk could be worse tbh.
‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ was one of the first personal development books I read (By Susan Jeffers) and it was quite instrumental in me changing my thought process around FEAR. Its always going to be there…so suck it up sister! I actually have this conversation in my head regularly:
Me: Oh crap, do I really have to put myself out there again?
Mini-Me: Yes Emma.
Me: But shiiiit! I am so scared that they will hate me and throw eggs (metaphorically) at me!
Mini-Me: Ok yes that could happen, but also…maybe not. You just gotta try it.
Me: But what if I fall on my face? What if they say no? What if they say yes? What if they ignore me? What if? What if? What if?
Mini-Me: Okay then. Walk away Emma. Do nothing. Be nothing and walk away.
Me: F*** that! How dare you tell me to walk away! Do you know who I am and what I am capable of? I’ll show you…
Mini-Me: Sigh.
And YES this conversation is sometimes out loud. Call me crazy…? Who cares.
Does this happen to you? Can you relate?
So yesterday I was in my local town centre running errands and meeting people who had bought the book. I had just 3 copies of it on me – and decided to walk into Dymocks (Book store) and ask if they would have my book for sale in their store.
No prep. No time to talk myself out of it. I actually JFDI’d.
I was introduced to John the owner/manager and the sales assistants. John took one look at the book – and said yes! Then proceeded to call head office and enter my information into their system to sell straight away. Impressed? I was over the moon crazy!! OMG!! They even said we can do book signings there (stay tuned). How supportive is that?
So I asked.
They said yes.
I achieved more than some authors ever do.
Well done me.
Well done me for ‘asking’. What would have happened if I hadn’t asked? Perhaps not a lot. But this situation was PIVOTAL. Who knows what it will bring.
So your task for today is to ASK.
Ask if you need help.
Ask if you want to talk.
Ask. Ask. Ask.
Yes they could say no etc. But don’t let that put you off.
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Emma xx
P.S When I see you, I will ask if you will buy my book. Because if I didn’t ask… how would I sell it? lol
