Watch your language

Now, I know what you’re already thinking. ‘Emma, you can be a bit a of a swear-bear’, and you are correct – but today I am talking about the language you tell yourself. 

More specifically, the habitual and perhaps unconscious words you are ‘putting out there’. 

But before I delve in – you do need to know that your mind wants to be ‘right’ ATFT (all the f*****g time). 

It’s kind of simple, to be frank. 

You tell it something; it searches for the evidence. 

You say something out loud – it wants to be right. 

Again, ATFT.

Example: You want to look for a new car. Suddenly that car is everywhere. 

Your brain searches for the evidence and will ultimately change your focus until it finds it. 

The exact same goes for what you what you tell yourself. 

I remember I used to tell myself that I would lose my voice four times a year. And I did. 

When I decided to tell myself a different story – which was ‘I never lose my voice’ guess what happened? I didn’t. And it has been years since this has happened. #whoknew?

Us awesome humans also tend to over-exaggerate don’t we? And I know I have been guilty of this in the past…

I am so starving; I could eat my own arm off.

Could I? 

I am dying inside. 

Am I? Or do I just feel bored/hungry/frustrated at/insert the thing that is really bothering me.

Kill me now. 

This saying is common these days, and I hear it more and more. Kill me now is brutal!

Let’s go back to the beginning. 

YOUR MIND WANTS TO BE RIGHT. 

If you say this kind of thing – whether that is habitual or you are mimicking someone. Be.Careful. 

Other examples are:

This person/the kids are sending me mad.

I am going crazy with XYZ.

My heart was stamped on and broken into a million pieces.

I feel like I have been hit by a truck.

My world is falling apart.

That will bankrupt me.

It costs an arm and a leg.

I almost died doing XYZ.

I can’t take it anymore. 

I hate people that do that.

This/it will be the death of me. 

Any of this sound familiar? 

Consider the time you said it. Was it true? Did it happen? Were you being dramatic? Do you need to keep saying it? 

I know a lot of this is generational and I know a number of these things are old sayings – but what if by changing your language – you could change your life? What if? 

What have you got to lose? 

I am curious, now I have mentioned this…will you ‘tune in’ and listen to what you are telling yourself? 

Watch your language and be careful what you wish for, you never know, do you?
